I am an economist, geographer, and millennial. I use high-quality research and data to develop policy recommendations, and as the Lead Economist at Think Forward, I research and advocate for intergenerational fairness in Australia's policymaking.
Intergenerational fairness describes the idea that there should be economic and social fairness between generations. Each generation should leave Australia better off than they found it, and not introduce policies that benefit the current generation in power over young and future generations.
But this intergenerational bargain is under strain. Australia's millennial generation is at risk of being the first generation since federation to have worse economic outcomes than the generation before.
Major issues include the cost burden of an education, the housing crisis, job insecurity and minimal wage growth, climate change and Australia's poor fiscal position exacerbated by a host of tax concessions for older wealth holders. The common thread across these issues is the persistent short-termism in government outlook and policy. Our vision at Think Forward is to ensure that the interests of all generations are equally balanced in policymaking by implementing tools and frameworks that promote intergenerational thinking. We want an economy and taxation regime that works for all generations.
As a media spokesperson, I can comment on the intergenerational fairness of Australia's economic, housing, education and taxation policy announcements. I have previously appeared in the media discussing economic issues related to young people, including on the Today Show, the Daily Aus and Radio National.
